4:00 - 4:30  General Session Welcome, Bruner 119

4:45 - 6:00  Session I:  9 - 12
                    Bruner 123
Abstract:  "Using Geometer's Sketchpad to Explore Triangles."  Special segments (median, altitude, angle bisector, perpendicular gisector) in triangles will be explored along with circumcenter, incenter, orthocenter, and centroid.  The sine and cosine functions will be illustrated using the "Animate" feature of Geometer's Sketchpad.
Facilitator: Mrs. Shelly Forgey, Mathematics, TTU

6:00 - 7:00  Dinner, Roaden UC, Multi-Purpose Room

7:00 - 7:45  Session II:  5 - 8
                    Bruner 111
Abstract:  "Teaching the mean, mode, and median: What's your test average?"  When teaching meansures of central tendency, there are common examples which give insight into the reasons for using the mean, median or mode as the "best" measure of centrality.  Such examples include considering the average husehold income (median) or finding the average number of children in a family (mode).  In this presentation, an example of averaging is given using test grades which appeals to student's ideas of fairness.  From this example, maximum likelihood and mean absoulte deviation as they are related to creating the measure of central tendency.
Facilitator:  Dr. Michael Allen, Mathematics, TTU

8:00 - 8:45  Session III:  K - 5
                    Bruner 111
Abstract:  "Hands-On Measurement Activities for K-5."  In this session, we will explore a variety of standards-based measurement activities for teaching math in K-5.  Activities and lesson plans will be provided to teachers along with strategies for teaching measurement conceptually.
Facilitator:  Dr. Holly Anthony, Curriculum and Instruction, TTU

Adjournment

The Upper Cumberland Teachers Council (UCTC) is an umbrella organization incorporating five teacher groups distinguished according to discipline: (1) Sciences, (2) Mathematics, (3) English, (4) Foreign Languages, and (5) Social Sciences.

Membership in the UCTC is automatic for any teacher who is interested in one of these five disciplines and is affiliated with a school, community college, technical college, or university in the 20-county service area define by the Tennessee Department of Education (see the map at the bottom of this page). School and college administrators are considered ex officio members of the UCTC and are welcome to participate in any of its activities.

Each of the five groups creates opportunities for teachers at the various levels (preschool through college) to communicate about the content of their courses and the learning resources available to assist them in their work. The overall aim is to enhance learning and improve the progression of students from level to level.

The UCTC participates in the statewide P-16 initiative. For more on this initiative; see: http://www.tbr.state.tn.us/academic_affairs/p16/p16case.htm
